Validate your emotions, not every thought.

Feel it. Honor it. Check the facts.

All emotions are valid. Not all thoughts are factual. You can feel something deeply without it being true.

01

The balance

Validate the feeling

Validation means acknowledging your internal experience without judgment. It helps your nervous system feel seen and safe.

  • This makes sense that I feel this way.
  • I’m allowed to feel emotions.
  • It’s okay to be struggling right now.
  • My feelings are real.
Don’t accept every thought as fact

Emotions are like waves. They’re powerful, but not always accurate about what’s really happening. Unhelpful thoughts sound like:

  • Everyone is mad at me.
  • I always mess everything up.
  • This feeling will last forever.
  • I can’t handle this.

Validate the feeling. Check the facts. Respond with wisdom, not just your emotions.

02

Why neurodivergent brains can have intense feelings that don’t fit the facts

Sensory overload

Too much input can trigger fight, flight, or freeze responses.

Emotional intensity

Many neurodivergent brains feel things more deeply and more quickly.

Pattern detection

We notice details others miss. Our brains try to protect us from potential threats.

Executive function

Harder time filtering, shifting perspective, or putting emotions into context.

Past experiences

Old wounds can amplify present emotions, even when we’re safe.

Rejection sensitivity

Heightened fear of rejection can make neutral events feel risky.

These responses are not flaws. They are adaptations. Compassion first. Clarity next.

03

DBT skill: Check the Facts

A DBT skill that helps you slow down and see what’s really true right now.

Pause

Take a breath. Notice the feeling in your body.

Identify the story

What am I telling myself right now?

Check the facts

What evidence supports this? What evidence doesn’t?

Find balance

What’s the most balanced, wise perspective?

Choose a response

Respond from wisdom, not just emotion.

An example

The situationA friend didn’t text back.
The feelingAnxious, hurt, rejected.
The thoughtThey must be mad at me.
Check the factsEvidence for: They haven’t replied.
Evidence against: They’re busy, their phone might be dead, they’ve done this before.
A balanced thoughtThere are many possible reasons. It’s not about me.
A wise responseI’ll give it time and focus on what I can control.

Gentle reminders

Your feelings deserve kindness. Your thoughts deserve clarity. You deserve both.

It’s possible to honor your emotions and still choose what serves you. Feel it. Check it. Choose it. You’ve got this.
